The Microbiome
Skin Microbiome
Human skin is home to millions of bacteria, fungi and viruses that compose the skin microbiome. Like those in the gut, microbes have essential roles in the education of our immune system and the protection against pathogens. When the microbiome is out of balance (dysbiosis), it can result in various of skin problems or even systemic disease.
Chemicals, antimicrobial agents, and antibiotics are often used as treatment, but it is often unsuccessful and harmful to the entire skin microbiome, leading to prolonged or chronic skin diseases.
